In 1981 anti-apartheid protestors rallied to resist the Springbok rugby team’s tour of New Zealand. In spite of massive opposition and warnings of civil unrest, the Muldoon government allowed the tour to proceed.
The nation was torn between those outraged at the racial discrimination practised by South Africa’s apartheid regime, and those who’s love of rugby outweighed all other considerations.
What followed was the most controversial and violent chapter in recent New Zealand history. It not only highlighted the human rights abuses of apartheid, but also exposed a racial divide in New Zealand.
