For two nights at Manukau’s Genesis Theatre, over 55 musicians – composers and performers - took lyrics written by Witi Ihimaera and transformed them into twelve beautiful songs, weaving them into a veritable rainbow of sound. The result was a once-in-a-lifetime concert that celebrated the best of words and music this country has to offer.
Ihimaera, directed by Lala Rolls, takes us deep into the heart of how this music came to be – from the man himself, Witi Ihimaera, whose life has inspired the lyrics, specially commissioned for the concert by the Auckland Arts Festival 2011 – to the song writers who created the music, and the musicians who made it come alive on stage.
